Engine Identification
Use the information below to identify the year and originally equipped engine for vehicle produced from model year 1983 to present. Then use the VIN code information to select the correct replacement engine for the vehicle.
The VIN plate contains a 17 digit code that is unique to each vehicle. It is located on the top left side of the instrument panel. It is easily visible when standing outside the vehicle.

The engine code (commonly referred to as the VIN code) is the 8th character on the VIN plate. (See diagram 2) The model year is represented by the 10th character on the VIN plate. The model year information is as follows:

8th digit is engine code 10th is year of the vehicle
Then take this information to our catalog. A sample entry from our catalog may read:
1987-1990 FORD ESCORT, LYNX W/ROLLER VIN 9
So if your 10th character is H, J, or K and your 8th character is 9, this would be the engine for you!
